A review by Drew:
I came across Run by Blake Crouch from reading Joe Konrthat's blog a few months ago. I'm not a Steven King fan. I've never read the works of Dean Koontz or Thomas Harris, yet this is what RUN was compared to.  Yet from the description alone, which is posted below, was enough to peak my interest and pay the $2.99. A really fair price for this well written book.

I'm not usually a fast reader, yet this book sucked me in. I read it in about 2 or 3 days. I really lost track of time. Had I been able to skip work and family responsibilities I would have probably read the book straight through.

There is some violence...but not overly gruesome or over the top in my opinion. Blake doesn't go into explicit detail of what is going on but leaves your imagination to do most of the work. It's not gratuitous either. What violence is included seems reasonable for the story line.

The story is about Jack Colclough is a father and husband. Faced with what seems as most of the world trying to kill him he is consumed with the task of survival for him and his family. Perhaps what pulled me in is because I myself am a father and husband and tried to imagine what I would do in the same situation. What length would I go to protect my family from someone else?

Here is the description from Amazon:

For fans of Stephen King, Dean Koontz, and Thomas Harris...
Picture this: A landscape of American genocide...

5 D A Y S A G O
A rash of bizarre murders swept the country…
Senseless. Brutal. Seemingly unconnected.
A cop walked into a nursing home and unloaded his weapons on elderly and staff alike.
A mass of school shootings.
Prison riots of unprecedented brutality.
Mind-boggling acts of violence in every state.

4 D A Y S A G O
The murders increased ten-fold…

3 D A Y S A G O
The President addressed the nation and begged for calm and peace…

2 D A Y S A G O
The killers began to mobilize…

Y E S T E R D A Y
All the power went out…

They’re reading the names of those to be killed on the Emergency Broadcast System. You are listening over the battery-powered radio on your kitchen table, and they’ve just read yours.
Your name is Jack Colclough. You have a wife, a daughter, and a young son. You live in Albuquerque, New Mexico. People are coming to your house to kill you and your family. You don’t know why, but you don’t have time to think about that any more.
You only have time to….

I found this very entertaining read. Well worth the price and really enjoyable. There is certainly some language and of course some violence. Yet Blake tells a very good story.

A review by Drew~

I met Rusty on the Kindleboards Forum. A place where Kindle authors and users hang out. He was asking for some opinions and we struck up a friendship. I'll admit, I'm somewhat partial to Bigfoot. I would love to see one. I would love to think that they are real. I would love to get a bunch of video and pictures of one. Just seeing a book of Bigfoot stories was enough to make me want to buy the books. So, I quickly picked up Rusty's Six Short Bigfoot stories and was not disappointed.

Rusty certainly has a limited market with these books....but that is a shame. His books are well written and the stories are both interesting and fun at times. Often they are just plain scary. If you have ever sat around a campfire and shared a scary story....then you will feel right at home with these. If like me, you would like to believe that the big hairy guy is real and lurking just around the next corner or behind the next tree, then these books are certainly for you.

Rusty has spent years in the outdoors and used his time with other adventurers to collect their tales of bigfoot. These are more then just just the crazy or fun campfire story that is told to scare the kids. Rusty's stories will give ammo for the believers and will convert the skeptics. There is nothing scientific or investigative with these stories, but that is fine by me. They come across as real, factual accounts from good people who experienced something strange and unusual out in the wild.

Rusty has two other books, Bigfoot Campfire Stories and More Bigfoot Campfire Stories. These are both sold on Kindle for $9.99. Six Short Bigfoot Campfire Stories is only $2.99 and will give you a taste of his writing and the quality of his stories. Once you have read this book you won't have any hesitation in picking up his other two.

None of these stories are very long. And none of them are really interconnected. So you can sit down and read one in a few minutes or read a bunch in an hour. It's really up to you. If you like bigfoot....like a good story...then go ahead and get these books.

This story was originally published back in 1992, I think. I got one of the old prints of it off eBay. I enjoy collecting old books because of the vintage cover art. In this one, I really like the drawing of the couple, even though this isn't a very good scan of it. And the scary dude on the left...I don't recall anything like that in the book...

Anyway, to me, Secret Vampire is a classic in vampire tales and a must read if you fancy the fanged beings. If you see things in this that remind you of Twilight, well, that just tells you something interesting...L.J. Smith was first.

From Amazon:
"Teenage Poppy, petite, dynamic Poppy, has pancreatic cancer, a death sentence not even she can escape. Then her lifelong friend (and secret love) James confides that he can save her..."

Obviously this is meant for teens, but I love reading teen novels and I LOVED this story. The series has been reprinted more than once and it can be purchased in Night World #1. This volume contains Secret Vampire and two other stories in the Night World series. Megan has read those and she will review them for you sometime soon. This is a clean and sweet read.

The sad thing for this author is that she's been "fired" from actually writing her own books. It's a perfect example of how big publishers can take advantage of authors then and now. Yes, they're actually keeping her name, but the Vampire Diaries books are now being written and rewritten by ghost writers.

One word  reveiw: Touching

Will I read it again? Certainly (Twice so far)
Would I recommend it? Obviously I do.
Was it violent? I wouldn't say so.
Was it clean? Yes.

Introduction

We are a family of readers and a writer. Our tastes are somewhat varied between our family so we decided to take turns and write reviews on the books we're currently enjoying.

First, here is our review policy:
  • We'll never bash a book. Everyone has different likes and dislikes. Every writer has different strengths and weaknesses. We will try to post an honest and fair review without bashing the author. If we really dislike the book, you probably won't see a review for it here.
  • We will only post a review for books we finish. We have seen some reviewers who never finish a book then post a review about it. That's not fair to the author or those reading the review. If you can't judge a book by it's cover, then you can't judge a book you haven't finished either.
  • We'll accept books in printed or e-book formats for review. If you think one of us might like your book, contact us at  tatterpagesreviews@gmail.com
  • We'd also be happy to post author interviews and book giveaways. Again, just email us if you're interested.
What Drew likes to read:
My tastes are all over the board. So is my frequency in reading. Yet I'm partial to history--especially when a sense of adventure is mixed in. I often switch between fiction and history and then mix in a religious text of one sort or another. I've enjoyed the works of Neil Gaiman, The Ender's Game Series by Orson Scott Card, the books by Joe Kurmaskie about bike touring and his adventures there. For history I'm partial to books written like Flag of our Fathers by James Bradley or In Harm's Way by Doug Stanton.

What Cheri likes to read:
I fancy romance mostly and in many sub-genres. I love to get lost in a good fantasy, to be enchanted by a sweet fairy tale, to get lost in a passionate paranormal, and to be entertained by a rich historical. I do tend to lean toward YA even though many of my favorites are not. But, as I said before, I prefer lots of romance in any story I settle in to. Authors I favor are Lynn Kurland, Lynsay Sands, Teresa Medeiros, Brandon Sanderson, L.J. Smith and Lisa Kelypas.

Megan likes to read:
I enjoy reading just about any young adult fantasy. I love books by authors like L.J. Smith, Cheri Schmidt, Laura Bingham, and Cassandra Clare.

For our first post, we'll start with one of Drew's reviews because it's fitting for Halloween. Cheri and Megan won't read this book, there's just not enough romance for them, but Drew liked it...

I was never a big Zombie fan until I read World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War by Max Brooks. I'll certainly have to review that at a later time. Yet WWZ opened my mind to additional books such as Feed by Mira Grant.

Mira Grant is actually a pen name for Seanan McGuire. So while it appears that Feed is her first work, it is not.

For me even a book of complete fiction needs to be plausible. Mira's approach to zombies is unique yet doesn't require you to check all sensibility at the door. The story is a work set in the near future where the regular news channels report only what they think we want to hear. It's the bloggers of this world who start telling the truth and reporting it in real time. The event for these bloggers to report turns out to be a new set  vaccines that have gone bad and brought the entire world the scourge of Zombies.

We follow the path of a group of young bloggers who are born into this world of Bloggers and Zombies. They are asked to blog on the campaign trail of an up and coming presidential candidate. There is some language and of course some blood and violence. Yet the book is well written and an enjoyable read. Even if you don't like Zombies or horror - give this one a try.

Feed (Newsflesh, Book 1) is available for the Kindle at Amazon for $9.99.
